Encryption and Decryption

Learn about the Encryption Action category in Automations.

One standout feature of Couchdrop is that you can encrypt and decrypt files automatically as part of a workflow, without requiring separate software for these tasks.

Encryption keys in Couchdrop

In order to use Encryption as part of a workflow, you need to create and store encryption keys in Couchdrop.

From the admin panel, you can add existing encryption keys to the account or generate keys (for AES only). Key storage and configuration is found in the Admin panel under Administration> Keys.

Supported key types

Encryption Key	Requirements
AES	Name for the key. Optional Passphrase. This can be generated in Couchdrop.
PEM	Name for the key. Choose Public or Private key and add the formatted key. This can NOT be generated in Couchdrop.
PGP	Name for the key. Choose Public or Private key and add the PGP ASCII Armored key. This can NOT be generated in Couchdrop.

Available Encryption Actions

Once you have the keys added to Couchdrop, you can use Encryption Actions. All Encryption Actions require you to specify the key to use as part of the Action configuration.

Action Category	Description
PGP Encrypt	Encrypt and sign a file with a PGP key
PGP Decrypt	Decrypt and verify a file encrypted and signed with PGP
AES Encrypt	Encrypt a file with AES
AES Decrypt	Decrypt a file encrypted with AES

I don't have encryption keys. How do I generate them?

Encryption keys can be generated in several ways. See our guides on Using SFTP/SSH keys for walkthroughs on creating keys in Windows, MacOS, or Linux.

How do I add a passphrase to my keys?

Passphrases can be added for extra security during key generation. See How to encrypt/decrypt a private key for details.

Can I have multiple different keys in my account?

Yes, you can add as many encryption keys as you need. You will specify the one you want to whem modifying a workflow.

Can I encyrpt/decrypt files outside of workflows?

No. Encryption and decryption actions are specific to workflows.
